Congressman Murtha is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration's handling of the war in Iraq. Elected in 1974, Murtha continues to serve the people of Pennsylvania in Congress today. Murtha is the recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and is the ranking minority member on the House Appropriations subcommittee on Defense.

Walz, a retired Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major, has also been critical of the President and of his opponent for his failure to understand the situation. Although Walz and Murtha have differing opinions about the best way to resolve the situation in Iraq, they do agree that the Republican plan is not working.

Walz is endorsed by VETPAC and today received the endorsement of Veterans and Military Families for Progress. VMFP is a an organization made up of members from across the country, and from across the breadth of rank and military services, who served, are serving, or are members of families of those who have heeded the call to serve their country in the U.S. military.

In a release, VMFP said, "Walz’s strong commitment to the issues that are critical to veterans, active serving members and their families is unsurpassed. His public support for mandatory full funding of the Veterans Administration and his declared determination to fight for Concurrent Receipt of Pension and Disability give veterans and their families hope that at long last a Congressman will vote in such a way as to keep faith with those who have served and sacrificed."
